Gold Medalist Colleen Coyne, Amesbury Mayor Kezer, a Newburyport police
officer, local high school students, and others in unique fundraising game.
Mike Eruzione, the captain who led the 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team to its spectacular “miracle on ice” Gold medal victory in Lake Placid–scoring the winning goal against the Soviet Union, will join “Team Nate” in the Bruins Skate for Nate. The fundraiser game to support the Nathaniel Bibaud Recovery Fund is Saturday, October 29th, 2011, 4pm-7pm, at The Governor’s Academy Whiston-Bragdon Arena in Byfield. Tickets are on sale now at Amesbury Skate & Sport; John Farley Clothiers; Interlocks Salon & Day Spa; The Provident Bank; and Surfland Bait & Tackle. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door before the game.
“From experience, I know it is possible to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds and achieve success. I am overwhelmed by Nate Bibaud’s amazing attitude and determination to walk again, and this community’s support for him,” said Mr. Eruzione, a Winthrop, MA, native. “I’m thrilled to join ‘Team Nate’ and honored to share the ice with great hockey legends such as the Boston Bruins alumni. Let the game begin!”
The Boston Bruins alumni team will include, among others, Rick “Nifty” Middleton, Terry O’Reilly,
Ken “The Rat” Linesman, and the great Ray Bourque who will come out of retirement to play in this game. They will team up against lines of players consisting of local community leaders, residents and students.Mike Eruzione will join ‘Team Nate,’ which includes members of The Cheefs Lawrence street hockey league co-founded by hockey lover Nate Bibaud. Also playing is 1998 U.S. Women’s Hockey Olympic Gold Medalist Colleen Coyne of Amesbury, the only woman to play. Other lines will feature two-time collegiate All-American Ralph Cox of Newbury and Newburyport police officer Richard Rocco. Hockey enthusiast Amesbury Mayor Thatcher Kezer will be a goalie during a part of the game.
Also forming a line for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play against some the greatest hockey players of all time will be members of the ice hockey teams at Amesbury, Newburyport, Pentucket, and Triton high schools. The schools’ hockey teams have been instrumental in fundraising to support the Nathaniel Bibaud Recovery Fund. The player from each school raising the most funds will form a line in the game.
“Bruins Skate for Nate” is more than a game: it is a demonstration of the community’s financial and moral support for a young man in need and who, we believe, will one day overcome the odds now facing him,” says committee member Ralph Cox. “It will also be an amazing event for hockey and team sports fans alike: seeing familiar faces on the ice, rooting for a team or classmate, cheering for beloved Boston Bruins players, and watching Olympic Hall of Famer, Mike Eruzione.”
Before and during the game, Flatbread Pizza, Chococoa whoopie pies, and baked treats from Cathy’s Country Kitchen will be available for sale with proceeds supporting the Nathaniel Bibaud Recovery Fund. There will also be a 50/50 Chuck-a-Puck contest and raffle prizes drawn the night of the event, including:

About the Nathaniel Bibaud Recovery Fund
Proceeds from Bruins Skate for Nate will support ongoing rehabilitative care for Nate Bibaud, 27, an Amesbury native and hockey enthusiast who sustained a serious spinal cord injury and was paralyzed from the chest down last December while working in St. Croix, USVI. Through hard work, Nate is making encouraging strides, but his intensive daily therapy is expensive and not covered by health insurance. To learn more about Nate’s inspiring story of perseverance and determination to regain mobility, visit www.natebibaud.org. To make Bruins Skate for Nate a success, hockey teams from area high schools–Amesbury, Newburyport, Pentucket and Triton–have set aside their “river rivalry” to come together to support the event. Each school’s varsity hockey team will provide a player to form a line to play against the Bruins Alumni team. In addition, the players and their fellow students are implementing several fundraisers: please contact the schools to find out how to support their efforts!
Tickets to Bruins Skate for Nate are $20 for adults; $10 for students under 18; and kids under 6 are free. Attendees will receive an official Boston Bruins Alumni Team/Skate for Nate commemorative program book featuring Bruins Alumni team member photos. More than 700 people are expected to attend this great family event!
